How to Choose a Pediatrician

If you’re looking for a new doctor for your kids, you want to make sure you find someone who is trustworthy and knowledgeable. Pediatricians do very important work and enjoy helping children stay healthy and feel better.

If you have a newborn at home, you’ll need to choose a pediatrician for your family. In the old days, people would choose a new doctor by looking one up in the phone book or getting a referral or recommendation from someone they trust. Things haven’t changed much, but the internet is now the place to find listings for doctors.

If you aren’t quite sure how to choose a pediatrician, the American Academy of Pediatrics has identified four objectives for new families.

Anticipatory Guidance and Enhanced Parenting Skills

A pediatrician should offer guidance about many areas of your young child’s health which can include:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Immunizations
  • Newborn Follow-up Visits
  • Well Check Schedules

Establishing a Positive Pediatrician-Family Relationship

The relationship between your pediatrician and your family should be positive and beneficial. It will be for the long term, so you need someone you feel comfortable with. You might want to start looking even before your baby is born because you’ll likely be interacting with that doctor for the next 18 years.

Identifying and Approaching High-Risk Issues

Unfortunately, health risks can develop during pregnancy which means you’ll want a doctor who can help you work through them. A pediatrician can provide prenatal visits and ensure your children are healthy as they grow into young adults.

Information Gathering

Pediatricians collect information about their patients as well as the worries, hopes, and expectations of their parents. They are receptive to questions, especially from first-time parents. Gathering information includes visiting your new pediatrician’s office and/or reading some relevant reviews online.
